Goodbye Bonnie

Bonnie the hamster died last night. I knew it was coming. All the literature says hamsters average a two year life span and I brought a six week old Bonnie home in March two years ago. I'd seen a decline in her activity levels the last few weeks and she'd barely eaten this week, preferring soft foods and a little water.

I purchased a very cheap plant yesterday and so today I buried Bonnie in a plant-pot with the rose, while it was raining. Then I cleaned the cage out and folded it down, and took a long hot shower. Not how I wanted to start my morning nor celebrate Imbolc :/

When she was tiny, I was able to handle her, but around six months old she started to bite – drawing blood – every time I tried. So although I could hand feed her treats and get her out in her exercise ball or put up the metal rabbit run for her to play in, she was not the most cuddly of pets. She was my first and probably last hamster, and she provided some sense of companionship and responsibility. Goodbye, Bonnie.

Oh, condolences for the loss of your furry. It's sweet that she will now be part of a rose. Hug~~~

Oh no! I hope you don't think me insensitive! It's the icon I usually use for my screen name. (I thought it cute also)
I'll change it, but wanted to apologize first. I am sorry. Hug~~~

No, no, no! It's adorable. I didn't think you were insensitive at all! *hugs*
I'm on the fence about getting a mouse/mice actually. We had some lovely ones before and they were so tame. Then my sister had a vampire mouse who used to bite really hard and now I'm hmmmmmm about handling mice!
I've never had a gerbil either and they're apparently a good option, cheaper to look after than rats but less bite-y than hamsters :)

Re: *hugs*
My son when he was little loved all things rodent! I must say, rats hands down are my favs. Their just smart lil buggers and we had a sweet female fancy one for a bit. He now owns Sugar Babies! 'Flying' little dudes who are really adorable.

Re: *hugs*
I miss my rats but my sister has two so I get to cuddle those, and I'm well aware of the extra costs involved.
For the cost and space - including existing cage - my options are limited.

Oh that is so cute! I don't have the space for the size cage I'm sure they need but what adorable creatures ;)
